Feeling a bit chafed, we did water breaks every 5 miles to rest our seating bones. Between miles 8 and 10 we went through the area known as Seven Locks (since there are seven lift-locks here). When we got under the beltway we knew we had only 9 more miles to go… only single digits now! When we arrived to Fletcher’s boathouse on mile 3 we decided to avoid the crowded final part of the canal and arrive to Georgetown via the paved Capitol Crescent trail. That gave us a break, although we still were not able to coast.
Of course the metro was malfunctioning (this is Washington DC) and we had to ride among hordes of tourists to the metro station of Archives/Navy Memorial. This added a few scenic miles to the end of the ride. Note to self: avoid Constitution Avenue the weekend before the 4th of July.
